Continuing Education Workshop:
Emerging Technologies for the Busy Librarian
Co-sponsored by LibraryLinkNJ – the New Jersey Library Cooperative, this class is designed to give the busy librarian an overview of emerged and emerging technologies impacting (or potentially impacting) our profession. It is a survey course that will cover a variety of technology topics. Topics discussed will be updated until the month prior to the course but could include: wearable technology, the Internet of Things, 3D printing, quantified self, mobile devices, personal cloud services, privacy, augmented reality, virtual reality, and collaboration tools. Students, health professionals and consumers use technologies to interact with health information on a daily basis. It is essential for librarians to investigate and experiment with these technologies to improve access to timely and relevant health information.
Educational Objectives:
At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Identify and discuss emerged and emerging technologies with potential to impact our profession
- Review technology trends with an emphasis how to keep up to date
- Identify technologies that can be employed in a hospital library or other potentially restrictive networks
- Review privacy issues within a digital ecosystem
- Apply case studies and recommendations for supporting mobile and social technologies at home institution
Gabe Rios is the Director of the Ruth Lilly Medical Library at Indiana University, Indianapolis, IN. He holds a master’s degree in library and information science from the University of Texas at Austin and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from the University of Texas at San Antonio. He is a former member of the board of directors of the Medical Library Association and holds an appointment to the Biomedical Library and Informatics Review Committee of the National Library of Medicine. He is a frequent lecturer at national meetings on a variety of topics in emerging technologies and health literacy for librarians. He has published scholarly works in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Library Administration and the Journal of Hospital Librarianship.
Melissa DeSantis is Interim Director of the Health Sciences Library at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora, CO. She holds a master’s degree in library and information science and a bachelor’s degree in psychology, both from the University of California, Los Angeles. She is a current member of the board of directors of the Medical Library Association. Melissa has been interested in technology ever since her first librarian position whose duties included assisting with the management of a computer lab located within the library.
Emerging Technologies for the Busy Librarian is approved for 4 MLA CE hours.

Students/Retirees: $45 (“students” are limited just to those currently enrolled in an MLS degree program only, please)
- Registration fees include all course materials, full lunch and morning refreshments.
- Access to a mobile device or laptop for use during the course is useful, but not required. Registrants will be contacted ahead of the course with a list of suggested applications to have installed for use during the course.
